PGL to host first CS:GO Major of 2022 in Belgium

Esports tournament organiser PGL has announced that it will host the first CS:GO Major tournament of 2022 on May 19th in Antwerp, Belgium.

The Major, set to take place at the Antwerps Sportpaleis from May 19th-22nd, will feature a prize pool of $1m (~£737,000) This is the first first time a CS:GO Major will occur in Belgium.  Belgium was PGL’s first option for the Major because it is situated in the heart of Europe. The location is accessible for everyone, and Sportpaleis is only 30 minutes away from the Brussels airport.

PGL Antwerp 2022 will be the fourth Major organised by the bucharest-based company. In addition, PGL will be supported by Belgian esports production company META for the event.

In a release, PGL citied that Belgium was the first option for this Major because of the country’s geographical location. The company also announced that spectators will be able to attend the playoff stage, but PGL is ‘ready to adapt plans to ensure the safety of everyone involved’.

Bart De Wever, Mayor of Antwerp, commented: “We are very excited to see this top-tier esports championship happening in Antwerp. The CS:GO Majors have millions of viewers, and tens of thousands of fans will visit our city to attend the matches. It is also the first time this tournament will take place in Belgium or the Netherlands. It puts Antwerp on the map internationally as a hot spot for esports, an immensely interesting and fast-developing sector.”

PGL has announced that the tickets for the tournament will be available soon. It is also important to note that the event’s prize pool of $1m is down from 2021’s Stockholm Major, which featured a prize pool of $2m.

PGL: We strongly believe that the fans represent a pivotal element in the Counter-Strike universe, and in order to have the best show possible, the players need to feel the energy of a packed arena. That being said, we are thrilled to announce that the CS:GO enthusiasts will have the chance to purchase tickets for the playoffs and cheer for their favorites. The main event will take place inside Antwerps Sportpaleis, between May 19-22. The tickets will be available soon.
